Getting married on Mallorca as a German – The ultimate guide (2025)

A wedding on Mallorca as a German couple is a dream – and with the right preparation absolutely achievable. This guide explains everything German couples need to know about getting married on the island: legal options, bureaucracy, costs, tips and typical pitfalls.

The 3 options for German couples

Option 1: Civil ceremony on Mallorca (only for registered couples)

This option is only possible if at least one partner is officially registered on Mallorca (Empadronamiento) – for holiday couples without residence it is not possible. Where it is possible, the marriage is automatically recognised in Germany; what is needed includes an apostille and translations.

Option 2: Symbolic ceremony + registry office at home

The most popular option: you first marry at the registry office in Germany (often with only close family present), and then celebrate a symbolic ceremony with a celebrant on Mallorca. The advantage: no Spanish bureaucracy, any location possible, any format. More on the free ceremony

Option 3: Church wedding

Catholic and Protestant weddings are possible on Mallorca. The requirement: you are baptised and your home parish issues the "marriage form". The ceremony itself is often conducted by a German pastor on request. Here too, the legal marriage must be arranged separately.

What German couples often underestimate

  • Language barrier with the authorities: Spanish officials rarely speak English. Apostilles, translations, appointments – everything in Spanish.
  • Lead time for the legal formalities: at least several months. Anyone who starts 6 weeks beforehand is too late.
  • Guest hotels: May/June/September are high season – hotels in premium locations are often completely booked up without a local intermediary.
  • Hidden costs: Tipping is customary on Mallorca, apostille fees, translations – it all adds up.
  • Wind: Beach ceremonies on Mallorca must be planned to be wind-proof – fabrics, hairstyles, sound system.

Travel tips for the bridal couple and the guests

  • Direct flights from 12+ German cities – most guests arrive without any problems
  • An ID card is enough – no passport required (EU)
  • Euro – no exchange fees
  • We recommend a hire car – early booking recommended, especially May–Sep
  • Health insurance: the EU card is sufficient, private travel insurance recommended
